The Emerald Cup
Riley recently ventured to Oakland, CA, for the 20th annual Emerald Cup, and the trip was an adventure from the start. Upon arriving in California, she indulged in an iconic rite of passage—a first-ever IN-N-OUT burger. Despite having visited the state before, this famous fast food chain had somehow eluded her. Unlike her previous trips focused on marine science, this time, Riley’s visit was all about cannabis—and, of course, the burgers!
At the Emerald Cup, Riley had the honor of speaking on a panel about the chemical and spiritual nature of outdoor-grown cannabis. Outdoor strains bring a unique chemical profile compared to indoor varieties, often offering a broader range of cannabinoids and terpenes, with THC levels that tend to be lower but more balanced. Riley joined an incredible lineup of women shaping the cannabis industry, including Tina Gordon, Colleen King, Lindsay MaHarry, and Christina Wong. Together, they explored everything from cultivation techniques to the intricacies of marketing and distribution, each offering their own insight into what makes outdoor cannabis truly special.
But the Emerald Cup was more than just discussions—it was a full sensory experience. Riley immersed herself in California’s best flower, met fascinating people from both inside and outside the cannabis industry, and soaked up the electric energy of live music and good vibes. One memorable moment? Lounging in the CBCB area, where she admired everyone’s stash bags, taking mental notes on the rolling papers used and marveling at the rolling skills of the Californians.
Riley’s trip didn’t end in Oakland—she made stops in San Francisco and Sacramento, expanding her exploration of California’s cannabis scene and culinary delights. Sacramento, in particular, left a lasting impression and quickly became her favorite stop of the trip. One of the highlights in Sacramento was a meet-and-greet hosted by her friend Diana, which raised an impressive $200 for NAP—a generous and heartwarming gesture from Diana and her community.
While in Sacramento, Riley was blown away by Cadre Cannabis, particularly their Sunset Haze strain, which she described as the smoothest and sweetest haze she’s ever experienced. She even had the chance to tour Cadre’s grow facility, learning firsthand about their cultivation methods, from the water used to the delicate drying and curing processes. This won’t be Riley’s last California adventure. She left in awe—not just of the flower, but of the warmth and kindness of the West Coast community. If you ever get the chance to attend the Emerald Cup or any cannabis festival, don’t hesitate—it’s an unforgettable experience you won’t want to miss!
