New Survey/Info on Cannabis and Sexual Intimacy - Happy Valentine’s Day
Happy Valentine's Day! A day to celebrate love, connection, and intimacy—because who doesn’t love love? Our early data from our 2024 Longitudinal dataset shows that a lot of people are using Cannabis to enhance physical intimacy. Read on to find out the different reasons that could be and participate in our early data collection that will help us create a more detailed study!
For many, intimacy isn’t always effortless. Whether it’s difficulty getting in the mood, feeling comfortable, or overcoming emotional or physical barriers, intimacy can be complex. If you use cannabis to help facilitate closeness, you're not alone. In fact, data from NAP’s longitudinal study (n = 2,855) found that 32.1% of participants reported using cannabis to enhance intimacy.
So, how exactly does cannabis support sexual health and pleasure? Let’s explore the science:
Easing Anxiety & Enhancing Relaxation
One of the biggest barriers to intimacy is psychological. Stress, anxiety, and past experiences can make it difficult to feel present and connected. Cannabis is a well-documented anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and anti-inflammatory, helping people feel more at ease both mentally and physically. By activating the endocannabinoid system (ECS), cannabis may help quiet intrusive thoughts, lower stress responses, and promote a sense of calm—allowing for more enjoyable intimate experiences.
The Endocannabinoid System & Natural Aphrodisiacs
Cannabinoids interact with the ECS, a key regulatory system that plays a role in mood, arousal, and pleasure. Research suggests that the ECS may be involved in aphrodisiac effects, which could explain why some people experience heightened sensitivity and arousal with cannabis. Interestingly, chocolate—often associated with romance—contains anandamide, a neurotransmitter sometimes called the "bliss molecule," which mimics the effects of THC in promoting pleasure and relaxation.
Overcoming Physical Barriers to Intimacy
For those with conditions like vaginismus (involuntary tightening of vaginal muscles), endometriosis, or pelvic pain, intimacy can be physically challenging. Cannabis may help by relaxing muscles, reducing pain sensitivity, and shifting mental focus away from discomfort. Infused lubricants and topical products can also provide localized relief and increased pleasure.
Enhancing Blood Flow & Arousal
THC is a vasodilator, meaning it expands blood vessels and increases circulation. Increased blood flow is essential for arousal in all genders—supporting enhanced sensitivity, longer-lasting pleasure, and improved erectile function.
Some ways to incorporate cannabis into intimate experiences:
Pre-Intimacy Rituals: A small dose of cannabis (inhaled or ingested) may help set the mood by promoting relaxation and sensory awareness.
Cannabis-Infused Lubricants: These can heighten sensation and reduce discomfort.
Edibles & Teas: Low-dose options can help sustain a relaxed and connected state over time.
Topicals & Bath Products: Can ease muscle tension and promote relaxation before intimate moments.
Intimacy is deeply personal, and cannabis is just one tool that may help enhance connection, pleasure, and comfort. Whether you’re exploring solo or with a partner, finding what works best for your body and needs is key. If you're new to using cannabis for intimacy, start low and go slow, paying attention to how different products and doses affect you. If you’re NOT new to cannabis and intimacy, there are a ton of ways to expand your horizon. From smoking with your partner in bed, to licking edible products right off your partner's skin there’s limitless potential once you and your body feel ready.
Wishing you a day filled with love, pleasure, and connection—however you choose to celebrate!
